Mission’s “Battle of the Brisket Barbecue Contest” Announces Winners,
Fifty-One Teams Competed for Top Prizes During Arts & Eats Festival
Mission, KAN (Sept. 17, 2007): There was an all-out battle for the best in bar-b-que in Mission, Sept. 14 and 15, as fifty-one teams vied for bragging rights in the “Battle of the Brisket State Championship Bar-B-Que Contest,” during the annual “Arts and Eats Festival,” according to Suzie Gibbs, Chairman of the Mission Business Development Council.
The Grand Champion honors for the highest scoring team in the four meat categories went to the Skin and Bones barbecue team of John Niederbremer and Russ Muehlberger, Prairie Village, KS. Coming in as Reserve Grand Champion went to Neal Dunker of Mission and his Dodge County Smokers. Prizes include a plaque, ribbon, and prize money. The Skin and Bones team is now eligible to compete in the American Royal Barbecue competition.
The top scoring teams in each category were: Chicken -- Fat Bastard and Lippy (Joe Pachecom, Kansas City, KS); Pork Ribs -- Scouts of Troup 192 (Greg Anderson, Mission); Pork -- Dodge County Smokers (Neal Dunker, Mission, KS); Brisket -- KC Jakes (Jack Dunlap, Desoto, KS); and Dessert -- Small Batch BBQ (Eugene Aldridge, Roeland Park). The Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event. Honors were given to the top ten highest scorers in each category. $5000 in prize money was awarded.
Sponsors of the bar-b-que contest were Coca Cola, Black & Veatch, Casey Brothers Sinclair, Casey Auto Repair, Batson Liquor, and Mission Tire & Service Center.
