Barbecue teams sought for the “Battle of the Brisket” state championship

Mission, KAN May 12, 2008): Applications are now available on line for the “AT&T Battle of the Brisket” State Championship Barbecue Contest, scheduled September 19, and September 20, 2008, in Mission, Kansas, according to Suzie Gibbs, Chairman, Mission Business Development Committee. The event is a part of the Mission’s annual “Arts & Eats Festival.”

Teams interested in competing must complete and submit a registration form with their entry fee by Wednesday, August 1st, 5:00 pm. Entry fee for participants is $125 and includes a 10’ x 20’ space, additional 10’ x 20’ space is available for $75. Electricity is $25.00. The “AT&T Battle of the Brisket” is a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event. Ribbons and cash prizes will be given through 10th place in the categories of Chicken, Pork Ribs, Pork, Beef Brisket, and Dessert. Prize money awarded will total $5,000. The Grand Champion Team will receive $1,500 in cash, a plaque, and a ribbon. The Reserve Champion Team will receive $750 and a ribbon. Teams must compete in all four meat categories to be eligible to be considered for the championship designation. Added this year is a “BBQ Team Spirit” award which will be presented to the team with the most creative theme development.

The Mission Business Development Committee (MBDC) was established in August 2003, by the City of Mission, Kansas to assist in the revitalization and redevelopment of the Mission business district. Responsibilities of the committee include development and administration of investment and revitalization programs for this area.
