Mission’s “Battle of the Brisket Barbecue Contest” Announces Winners,
Fifty-Seven Teams Competed for Top Prizes During Arts & Eats Festival
Mission, KAN (October 6, 2008): Mission, Kansas was smoking Friday evening Sept. 19, and Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 when fifty-seven teams vied for top prizes and bragging rights in the 2008 “Battle of the Brisket State Championship Bar-B-Que Contest,” during the city’s annual “Arts and Eats Festival,” according to Suzie Gibbs, Chairman of the Mission Business Development Council, the group that organizes the event.
The Grand Champion prize, given for the highest combined score in the four meat categories, went to the Dodge County Smokers (Neal Dunker, Mission and Chris Nickelson, Leavenworth).Winning the Reserve Grand Champion honor was the KC Skin-N-Bones team (Russ Muehlberger and Jon Neiderbremer-- Leawood). Fairway’s Burnin’ Pigs team (Mo Mott, Glen Weber, J.P. Thurlow, Luke Fleming, Mike Fleming) won the Team Theme and Spirit Award.
The highest scoring team in each category are as follows:
- Chicken -- Fat and Lippy B (Jennifer LuAnn Pacheco Joseph Pacheco-- Kansas City, KS)
- Pork Ribs – Rubbin-It-Lovin-It (Kerk Farthing & Chris Theis-- Shawnee, KS)
- Pork – Rib Stars (Bruce Campbell , Richard McPeake--Mission, KS)
- Brisket: Ole Style BBQ (Dan Hathaway, John Bellinger, Bob Hathaway, Jacque Hathaway—Louisburg, KS)
- Dessert – Burnin' Down the Hog (Phil Bader, Clint Myers, Brad Liggett, Lynda Hesp—Olathe, KS).
Prizes were given to the top ten highest scoring teams in each of these categories. The Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event.
Sponsors of the “Battle of the Brisket State Championship Bar-B-Que Contest,” were AT&T (title sponsor), Black & Veatch, Casey Auto Repair, Batson Mission Liquor, Mission Met Mart, Answer Pro, and WDS Marketing & Public Relations.
The Mission Business Development Committee (MBDC) was established in August 2003 by the City of Mission, Kansas to assist in the revitalization and redevelopment of the Mission business district. Responsibilities of the committee include development and administration of investment and revitalization programs for this area.
